so we were discussing which surgeries a gender would get more of. breast augmentation is the most popular for women it seems.
i put up my hand to add procedures like labiaplasty and vaginal rejuvenation to the list, just mentioning that both are increasing in popularity sadly enough.
and my prof seemed to have NO IDEA what i was talking about and said something about “er yes in some culture it would be popular”, which makes me think she thought i was talking about female circumcision.
like, no. female genital mutilation goes on in north america under the guise of “cosmetic surgery”. i need to reiterate this. labiaplasty and rejuvenation and the like are forms of genital mutilation. just because someone consents to it doesn’t mean its not problematic. the horrible side effects that occur in unsanitary conditions overseas often occur here as well, despite being done in a sanitary fashion.
side effects include infection, sexual dysfunction and discomfort, pain, poor healing, what have you. sounds a lot like the side effects for regular ol’ FGM overseas doesn’t it?
it happens in North America too. File it under “Designer Vaginas”. Understand that it’s not normal to hate how you vulva looks and worry about how your vagina feels to another person. this is learned behaviour. this is our society talking. Cutting yourself up to have the “perfect vulva” is just a representation of our culture’s sexist agenda.
and it is mutilation. i don’t care how you word it. it is mutilation.
